Foundation President's Message - Spring 2017

Great words to live by! As individuals traveling the road of life, it is a difficult journey. Some live up to these words, but for most, life centers on our daily routine, moving from task to task without giving this path a second thought. For some, this is a way of life.

For Wayne Grossman this was second nature…
Blessed with so many abilities and attributes that made him an excellent pediatric dentist, Wayne cared about children. He cared about other pediatric dentists and their ability to care for all children. He cared about his staff, his friends and his family.

Wayne was a champion of causes. For CSPD he was active on so many committees and a Board leader. He led by example. His creativity, in addition to his competence, led him to wonderful solutions. Who could forget the Annual Meeting he orchestrated with a cruise to Mexico or the recording of Murray the Moose’s greeting as a family entered his National Park-themed office.
Wayne believed strongly that all children, regardless of their background, their finances or other complicating factors, should have access to the finest care possible, ideally by a quality pediatric dentist.

He never ceased to fight for that and never let us lose sight of that goal.
His message to the young and newer pediatric dentists was to become active within the CSPD, to share their thoughts, ideas, passions and opinions. Just participate, he would say, at any level possible, so we, as pediatric dentists may continue to do what’s essential to keep our specialty strong.

Wayne Grossman (1946-2016)
I am so pleased to announce that the Grossman family has generously made a donation of $50,000 to create The Wayne Grossman Memorial Fund at the CSPD Foundation. - This fund will be specifically set aside for the direct treatment of children who do not qualify for any state or federal programs, while at the same time fulfilling the Foundation’s mission of enhancing the educational experience for our residents in training.

A message from Zoe Grossman:
“I am making this donation of $50,000 to honor my life partner, Wayne Grossman and his pediatric colleagues of the CSPD.

As many of you know, his death last year was very unexpected and quick. But, true to form in 23 days he was decisive, loyal and true to his values and heritage.

His colleagues and friends, acted selflessly and compassionately. You came to support him and say goodbye and many visited his grave.

We were childless for the first 20 years of our marriage. In this time he solidified his commitment and dedication to his chosen profession and work. After we adopted our son Alan, his understanding of children grew and broadened in even more responsible and creative ways. Whoa, what a bar mitzvah!

Wayne would have wanted this money to be used for the care of children, as he would have done if he had lived.

Thank you CSPD for these past 35 years of friendship and collegial support, definitely a run cut too short.”
- Zoe and Alan Grossman.

Wayne was a true friend to pediatric dentistry – and I’m proud to say, my friend in every sense of the word. As you travel the road of life, take a moment to reflect - Passion – Dedication – Generosity – Leadership… worthy traits to live by.

As always I welcome your comments and suggestions. (steveg@smlglobal.com)

Foundation President's Message - Fall 2016

I’m sure that on many occasions, all of you have asked yourselves this same question – “What’s the future of my profession, and what’s my future as a pediatric dentist?” As a professional, I also ask myself these questions. I’m personally and professionally embedded in the dental industry. Those of you who know me realize I have a real love of pediatric dentistry. Why? It’s because of what you do! When I was a child I had one of the worst experiences anyone could have in the dentist’s chair, and I to this day still fear going to the dentist. Fast forward 25 years: Pediatric dentistry as a specialty. WOW! What a difference in the life of a child. My own son loves to go to the dentist – all because his first time with a dentist was with a well-trained pediatric specialist, with the skills and training required to handle the needs of the young patient.

Paradigm Shift
Those of you who have been in practice for a while realize that dental benefits for children are gaining popularity, both in private and government programs.
By 2020, the largest segment of our population will be ages 0-18. How are we to handle this influx of patients in need? Approximately 4 million are born each year. More than half of these children are covered under the very challenged Medicaid dental program. Many corporate dental groups (CDGs) and dental service organizations (DSOs) are flourishing across the nation, hiring pediatric specialists, but also hiring general dentists, some with limited training in the treatment of children.

ADA Fact – Pediatric postdoctoral educational program applications are up – beating out oral surgery and orthodontics for the top spots. With this high influx of patients and continued demand for pediatric post-doctoral programs – How are the programs going to handle this surge?

Education!!!
As a specialty, now is the time for us to come together in support of the organizations that have supported you and who “have your back”, always looking for ways to strengthen our profession and to prepare for whatever the future may bring.

The CSPD Foundation
This is where the Foundation is most effective and continues to make a difference! – By addressing this crisis and supporting the educational programs in California with funding for additional staff, innovative programs, lunch & learn events and student groups.

The Foundation also supports the CSPD Annual Meeting, sponsoring key hot topic educational programs that are vital to the future care of children. We also fund CSPD leadership programs such as the Warren Brandli Internships and the Santos Cortez Legislative Advocacy Internships. These programs insure that CSPD and the Foundation are well supplied with passionate leaders now and into the future.

As an organization we have a voice in the future of our profession – but this voice cannot be heard without your support by giving to the Foundation.

Please join us in this ongoing effort by making a meaningful contribution to your CSPD Foundation when you receive my annual giving appeal letter in the very near future.

The Foundation Board joins me in expressing our sincere thanks for your support of the Foundation in the past, but more importantly now and into the future.

Foundation President's Message - Summer 2016

During the course of my many conversations with CSPD members, when I pose the question “Have you contributed to the CSPD Foundation…or do you plan to?” I more often than not receive a response somewhat akin to “Yes…I’m (already) a member of the CSPD.”

Based upon this curiously prevalent response, I must infer that more than a few CSPD members really are not aware of the distinction between the CSPD and the CSPD Foundation. So allow me to clarify a few things…Straight up: The CSPD and CSPDF are not the same!

The express mission of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is “to serve its membership and the public by advocating optimal oral health of infants, children and adolescents.”

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation (CSPDF) actively supports and promotes pediatric dentistry education, research and leadership. The CSPD Foundation is a separately governed body, created and maintained to raise charitable funds — through the generosity of the CSPD Membership and its corporate allies. These funds are used to support and enhance a wide array of programs benefiting pediatric dentists at every stage of their education as lifelong learners. The list is a long one and I am willing to bet you’ve been on the receiving end of one or more of these programs!

Over the last 13 years, your Foundation has funded more than $1,600,000 in grants and programs. It’s not enough.

We are 900 members strong. We try not to be discouraged that less than 100 members are stepping up each year in support of these wonderful programs. This raises $60,000. (If you do the math, you’ll note that means our average donor gives $500 or more each year.) We need to raise double that to continue to do all the things we need to do in support of our mission.

My goal is to achieve 100% CSPD member participation in the CSPD Foundation. Just imagine… if the remaining 800 members contributed as little as $100.00 — $1.93 a week — our campaign total would near the $110,000 mark.

Just $1.93 a week — a huge bang for the buck, when you appreciate the many ways this Foundation serves you, directly and indirectly, as a CSPD member.

As your Foundation president, it has been an honor to serve pediatric dentistry in California. I am proud to be associated with our profession in this way and would be most appreciative of your support. Please make your generous donation today! Thank you in advance for joining in this effort.
